Emergency services at the scene of a fatal fire in Ōtāhuhu

One person has been found dead following a sleepout fire in Auckland’s Ōtāhuhu.

Four fire trucks and police responded to the blaze on Tamaki Ave at around 9pm on Thursday.

The blaze has been extinguished and an investigator attended the scene.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Hayward said one person was found dead inside the property.

In an update this afternoon, Hayward said police were continuing to investigate the fire, which was being treated as unexplained.

"A scene examination has been carried out today alongside a fire investigator."

Hayward said formal identification procedures were underway, and a post-mortem examination was set to take place tomorrow.

"Given these enquiries remain in the early stages we are continuing to treat the circumstances as unexplained," he said.

FENZ assistant commander Chris Delfos said it was a good reminder to check fire alarms in your house and have an escape plan.
