Police allege high-speed drunken motorist fled up a dead-end street

St Andrews Way in Albany.

A 25-year-old who allegedly stole a car and drove twice the speed limit in Auckland while intoxicated is now facing multiple charges, police say.

Police were first notified of the stolen vehicle from Channel View Rd in Takapuna late last night.

Senior Sergeant CJ Miles said police then spotted the vehicle travelling north on Wairau R at about 1am this morning.

The Police Eagle Helicopter and other units then "flooded" the area, but were unable to locate the vehicle.

A short time later, police found the vehicle being driven "erratically" on the Albany Expressway.

Miles said the vehicle was crossing onto the wrong side of the road, and driving at excessive speed "more than twice the posted speed limit".

The vehicle then continued through the Albany area before it eventually came to a dead-end street at St Andrews Way, where it appeared the driver was "attempting to take another vehicle".

"Police arrived quickly and took the man into custody without further incident."

Police tested the man for alcohol and said he was twice the legal driving limit.

“It’s clear he had little regard for anyone else and I’m pleased we could put a stop to this before anyone else was put at risk.”

The man was due to appear in the North Shore District Court today, charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and driving with excess breath alcohol.
