Police have arrested a 24-year-old patched Black Power member over an alleged serious assault which took place over the weekend in Waikato.

On Sunday, 1News reported two people had been injured in what police called a "cowardly attack", after the pair attempted to confront occupants of a vehicle doing noisy burnouts in Mātangi on Saturday night.

The pair tried to speak to the occupants of the dark-coloured Ford Falcon at about 8pm on Marychurch Rd when three occupants got out and assaulted them.

They were taken to hospital in what was described as moderate condition.

Today, Inspector Andrea McBeth said this type of behaviour "will not be tolerated".

"We understand the frustration of residents where we are seeing anti-social road user behaviour, and for these people to go one step further and attack people trying to speak with them, is unacceptable.

"We are extremely lucky that we are not dealing with more serious consequences here. There is zero tolerance for this violent offending."

McBeth said further arrests were likely, and police were continuing to investigate the attack.

The 24-year-old is due to appear in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow.
