Space enthusiasts around the world have been treated to a rare total lunar eclipse overnight.
Night owls in New Zealand headed out overnight to try and catch a glimpse of what’s known as a blood moon.
The phenomenon occurs when the earth lines up between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow onto the moon’s surface that can appear coppery red.
The moon was fully immersed in the earth’s shadow just after midnight, and completed its eclipse just after 3am.

New Zealand was one of the only countries able to see the eclipse for its entire duration.

The blood moon could also be seen from Mexico and the Philippines.
