Person injured in two-vehicle crash on Auckland motorway

Firefighters used extrication equipment to free the trapped person.

One person has been seriously injured after a two-vehicle crash blocked most citybound lanes on Auckland's Northwestern Motorway earlier today.

The crash occurred near Lincoln Rd on State Highway 16 around 10am, with police, fire and St John all responding to the scene.

Fire and Emergency said crews found one person trapped and used extrication equipment to free them, with three fire trucks dispatched to the scene.

St John said it had been notified at 10.05am and responded with three ambulances, one rapid response unit and one manager. One patient was assessed, treated and taken to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition.

Police said only one citybound lane remained open during the disruption. Live traffic data earlier showed heavy congestion building up between the Lincoln Rd off-ramp and Westgate.

Citybound lanes on State Highway 16 were cleared as of 1.40pm.

"Police thank motorists for their patience."

Public transport users were earlier told to expect delays on bus lines WX1, 11T and 11W.
