Two people have been seriously injured in a "cowardly attack" after attempting to confront the occupants of a car doing "noisy burnouts" in Waikato's Mātangi last night.

The pair were trying to speak to the occupants of a dark-coloured Ford Falcon doing skids on Marychurch Rd around 8pm when three occupants got out and assaulted them.

"The victims have sustained serious injuries, requiring hospital treatment," police said.

"This was a cowardly attack, and police urge members of the public that recognise these people to get in touch now."
