A New Zealand woman who disrupted a local Ramadan prayer session in Indonesia is now facing deportation after it transpired her visa had expired.

In a video shared on social media, the woman can be seen yelling aggressively at locals in what Indonesian media has dubbed a "rampage".

The alleged incident took place at 11.30pm on February 19 on the island of Gili Trawangan.

Indonesia Expat reported that the woman had allegedly pulled out a microphone, reportedly angry that a group's loud reading of the Quran through speakers in a prayer room was disrupting her sleep.

In the video, she could be heard yelling: "Shut the f*** up! All of you, shut the f*** up!"

Locals tried to restrain her as she lunged at them.

Muhammad Husni, the head of Gili Trawangan village, told media the woman had scratched a person and threatened others during the altercation.

"Her disrespectful actions immediately angered the residents,” he said.

“Fortunately, our residents weren’t provoked and continued to explain. Although some were emotional, no one retaliated with physical violence.”

He said residents were still allowed to use overhead speakers to recite the Islamic scripture at that time of day.

According to the South China Morning Post, the woman's tourist visa expired on January 30, and she was now at risk of deportation over the incident.

Initially refusing to meet with immigration officials, she has now been taken to the immigration office, where further inquiries into her travel status were underway.

“The person concerned has been taken to the immigration office for further investigation into her overstayed stay permit,” said AKP I Komang Wilandra, the Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the North Lombok Police.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson told NZ Herald: "We are providing consular assistance to a New Zealander in Indonesia.”

Gili Trawangan is a largely Muslim island, with the majority of locals observing Ramadan,.

Muslims believe it was the month in which the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
