He's arguably one of the greatest athletes to ever grace the planet.

And surfing legend Kelly Slater could be coming to beach or a golf course near you in the next few days.

The 54-year-old's an ambassador at the New Zealand Open in Queenstown this week, before he heads up the country.

"I come every year and go up to the North Island and play at Tara Iti and Te Arai Links and stay around the Mangawhai area," he told Breakfast.

"Tara Iti's one of the greatest courses in the world, there's some really good surf here but you've got to kind of search around.

"It's a little bit fickle in New Zealand, just because you get a lot of weather change. But you get plenty of swell coming around the south part of Australia in to New Zealand."

The 11-time World Surf League champion is here with his girlfriend and toddler.

"Our little guy's getting to jump in the pool, he's having a blast," Slater said.

But with an expanding family - they're expecting another baby in May - the American won't be heading this way for the WSL event being held in Raglan.

"I really enjoy getting back here every year. I haven't done as much surfing here as I would hope to do. I have a bunch of friends in New Zealand, looks like there'll be some good waves this weekend in the South Island if I can get out there."

And despite a recent hip replacement, it's the weather causing the most issues for Slater's golf game.

"Yesterday I played with a pro but it was kind of ugly out there. It was tough to be in the game, the front nine for us was pretty much sideways rain and pretty cold. And we didn't bring an umbrella."

The morning's headlines in 90 seconds, including the Clintons front up over Epstein, and Australasia’s biggest festival takes over Christchurch. (Source: Breakfast)
