Police detective Senior Sergeant Paul Wilson said the female victim is "understandably extremely shaken".

She sustained "moderate" injuries in the attack, which police were alerted to at about 10.30pm.

After attending the scene on Ohiwa Harbour Road, police made inquiries in the area to locate the alleged offender.

He was found on Phoenix Drive in Whakatāne shortly ater 12.30am, and was taken into custody.

Wilson said police are offering the victim all the necessary support.

A scene examination will take place on Ohiwa Harbour Road today, as police continue to investigate the "heinous attack".

"We understand the community will be shaken following this incident, and police will conduct reassurance patrols in the area.

"Our initial inquiries suggest this is an isolated incident, and there is not believed to be any further risk to the public."

The man was due to appear in the Whakatāne District Court today.
