Woman scammed out of $15k by caller pretending to be from bank

A 52-year-old Whanganui man has been arrested in connection to a false investment scam circulating New Zealand.

A man who allegedly scammed an older woman out of $15,000 by pretending to be from a bank's fraud team has been arrested.

The arrest came after patrol officers spotted a vehicle registered to the alleged fraudster travelling on St Lukes Road in Auckland just before 1am today, Detective Senior Sergeant Ash Matthew said.

Officers stopped the vehicle and confirmed the driver, a 23-year-old West Auckland man, was the man sought by police over the case.

The alleged phone scam occurred in March 2025.

The woman, described by police as "elderly", had $15,600 taken from her account after being called by a man pretending to be from a bank's fraud team.

Police were contacted by the bank's real fraud team, who had alerted the victim. An investigation was launched, and a person of interest was identified.

After his arrest this morning, the man was handed over to detectives and charged with money laundering and receiving property over $1000.

He will appear in the Auckland District Court on March 4.
