Three people have been arrested after a man was shot in Te Kauwhata last weekend.

Police were called after a man was treated for a gunshot wound at Waikato Hospital, shortly before 7am on Saturday, February 21.

The man was shot in the township of Te Kauwhata, north of Huntly, and police visited a property to make inquiries.

At the address, officers found a gun and ammunition, which were seized.

Two women and a man were arrested.

The women, aged 27 and 59, were due to appear in the Huntly District Court today, charged with two counts of unlawfully possessing a firearm, and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The man, 56, would appear in the Hamilton District Court on March 20, charged with unlawfully possessing a firearm and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Detective Sergeant Rahul Badri said the arrests were a good outcome for the victim and community.

“Not only am I pleased to be able to hold these offenders to account – I am also happy to have removed a firearm from circulation in the community.

“I commend the Police staff for their quick actions, which was essential to making these arrests,” Badri said.

Police said it was still supporting those affected by the incident, and reassured the community that there was no ongoing risk.
