Two people are in critical condition after a collision involving a car and a train in Taranaki.
Hato Hone St John said it was notified of the incident on Mountain Road near Inglewood at 8.45am today.
Two patients were being transported to Taranaki Hospital - one by helicopter and one by ambulance.
Police said the serious crash unit had been advised.
Traffic control was in place and the road was down to one lane, it added.
Kiwirail chief operations officer Duncan Roy said the collision occurred at about 8.40am, at a private level crossing which was protected by stop signs.
He said the freight train was travelling north to New Plymouth on the Marton-New Plymouth Line.
"In line with our standard practice our driver will be given leave, and all of our staff involved will be offered support from KiwiRail."
