Man allegedly rams two police cars after running red lights

A man was arrested in Auckland overnight after he allegedly rammed two police cars with a van, one being smashed into multiple times.

The vehicle was spotted by officers just before 1.45am in Manukau, where it was seen being driven "erratically", running through red lights.

The Eagle helicopter monitored its movements before officers successfully spiked it on Manukau Station Road.

Inspector Warrick Adkin said the driver then rammed a stationary police car "multiple times".

The driver then turned his sights to another patrol car entering the area, police allege.

“One vehicle has been extensively damaged as a result of the incident, but first and foremost none of our staff were injured as a result of the man’s dangerous driving this morning,” Adkin said.

The van was eventually stopped at the intersection of Te Irirangi Drive and Great South Road a short time later.

A 23-year-old man was taken into custody.

He would appear in the Manukau District Court today, charged with four counts of assault with intent to injure, intentional damage, dangerous driving, resisting police, and failing to stop.

The morning's headlines in 90 seconds, including a New Zealander arrested for allegedly accessing extremist material, and Scott Robertson has a new job. (Source: 1News)
