Evacuations are underway due to a large grass fire which is "threatening properties" in Central Otago this evening.
Police said they were alerted to a grass fire in the Springvale area, specifically around Brandy Hill or McArthurs Ridge around 4pm.
"At this time, Springvale Rd is closed and police are evacuating residents along the road," a spokesperson said.
"Police are supporting the Fire and Emergency-led response.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand said 13 crews and four helicopters were working to contain the blaze at Springvale, near Clyde, with another five crews on route.
"The fire is emitting a lot of smoke which is drifting towards Alexandra," it said.
"If you are in the vicinity of the smoke, please stay inside and keep windows closed."
FENZ said was working alongside police to support evacuations of impacted properties nearby.
Nearby residents were warned to take extra care while undertaking any hot works, including welding, grinding and lawn mowing, and were urged to stay away from the area.
