Three people are in a critical condition following a serious two-vehicle crash near Blenheim this morning.
Emergency services were called to the incident near Redwood Pass, south of Blenheim at around 10.40am.
Hato Hone St John responded with four helicopters, three ambulances, two managers, and one major incident support team vehicle.
Fire and Emergency NZ crews worked to extract multiple people who were left trapped in both vehicles.
Two people in a critical condition were airlifted to Wellington hospital, and one person in a critical condition was airlifted to Christchurch hospital.
State Highway 1 remains closed following the crash while emergency services clear the scene.
Motorists were advised to expect delays or avoid travel if possible.
"It is likely this section of SH1 will remain closed for several hours," NZTA Waka Kotahi said.
