A woman has been charged with burgling a West Auckland retirement village.

Her arrest comes as police investigate a spate of burglaries at retirement villages across the city.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ryan Bunting said police had been investigating an offence on one day in January, where five residents in their residences were allegedly targeted.

“Three residents have been the victims of burglaries with expensive jewellery and cash allegedly stolen.”

Police estimated $8000 worth of items were stolen.

A 60-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with three counts of burglary and two counts of being unlawfully in a building.

She was due to appear in the Waitākere District Court today.

Bunting said enquiries into other reported burglaries at retirement villages were underway, and further charges could not be ruled out.

“It’s unfortunate when vulnerable members of the community are targeted in this matter, and we will oppose the woman’s bail at her court appearance.”

He said it was a reminder for retirement village residents to be cautious.

“It’s important that residents be mindful of people who might be out of place in these villages, and keep an eye out for your neighbours,” Bunting said.

“Never let someone inside your unit unless you know who they are or have confirmed their identity with management."

He urged people to keep their valuables hidden and secure wherever possible.

“I’m encouraging families to check in on their loved ones and reiterate this advice.”
