What other royals have been arrested throughout history?

Tourists are seen outside Buckingham Palace on the day Britain's former prince Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is the first senior member of the British royal family to be arrested in nearly 400 years.

The former prince, who was stripped of his royal titles due to his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, was arrested overnight on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

The 66-year-old, who spent a decade as UK trade envoy, joins the small list of others from the British monarchy throughout history to be arrested.

Most recently, in 1649, King Charles I was arrested and put on trial on Parliament's orders for "High Treason and other high Crymes".

That turned into a seismic moment in British history, and led to Charles' beheading on January 30, 1649, outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall.

Following Charles' trial, there was an 11-year period when England was ruled without a monarch.

Various other royals throughout history have had brushes with the law, including Mary, Queen of Scots.

She was found guilty of plotting the assassination of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, in what became known as the Babington Plot.

After her arrest, she was held in various British castles under the custody of Queen Elizabeth I for nearly two decades from 1568 to 1587 and was eventually beheaded in February, 1587 at Fotheringhay Castle.

Queen Elizabeth I was the last monarch of the Tudor dynasty.

She was imprisoned in the Tower of London following her arrest in 1554 on suspicion of plotting against Mary.

Despite being under house arrest at Hampton Court Palace, she was allowed to wander in the gardens and had four rooms in the old palace.

She was eventually released due to lack of evidence tying her to the plot.

Lady Jane Grey was the titular queen of England for just nine days in 1553. The shortest-ruling monarch was imprisoned in the Tower and beheaded at age 16 after her father joined a Protestant rebellion.

Two of Henry VIII's wives were arrested and locked up, including Anne Boleyn in 1536 and Catherine Howard in 1542.

Both were arrested on charges of adultery and treason, locked in the Tower and later beheaded for their crimes.

Apart from Mountbatten-Windsor, no member of the modern British Royal Family has been arrested, despite brushes with the law.

Princess Anne was prosecuted in 2002 when one of her dogs bit two boys in Windsor Great Park. She wasn't arrested but pleaded guilty and was fined £500 in court.
