Four people were injured, one critically, following a shooting at a Christchurch home that police have confirmed was gang-related.

Police were called to a house on Hoani St in the suburb of Northcote at around 9.30pm on Wednesday.

In an update on Thursday afternoon, Detective Inspector Nicola Reeves confirmed a gun was fired during the altercation and that two people remained in hospital.

"We have also established that this was a gang-related incident and was targeted towards parties at this address," she said, adding that officers continued to examine the scene to gather information about the incident and those involved.

"We understand that incidents like this can be unsettling for the community, and would like to reassure people that we do not believe there is a risk to the wider public."

RNZ has reported it involved Black Power and Mongrel Mob.

Some neighbours told 1News today they only woke to the sight of police lights, with others saying they did not hear gunshots or anything to suggest something had happened on the street.

Police had been called to the area in the past, one neighbour said, adding they had seen gang members in the area previously.

Additional patrols would be visible in the area as police carried out inquiries, she said.

"We would still like to hear from anyone who might have information about this incident or those believed to be involved."

St John said it sent three ambulances, three rapid response units, and four operations managers to the scene.

"Four patients were transported to Christchurch Hospital in total, one in critical condition, one in serious condition, and two in moderate condition," a St John spokesperson said.

Anyone with relevant information should contact police on 105.
