Teen arrested over alleged arson that caused $50k damage at BMX club

The fire at the club canteen caused $50,000 in damage.

A teenager has been arrested over an arson that caused $50,000 of damage to a building at an Auckland BMX club.

An investigation was launched in November of last year after the Waitakere BMX Club's canteen went up in flames.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ryan Bunting said investigators believed the fire was lit in a rubbish bin that was leaning against the building at the Rānui club.

“This fire was intentionally started in a bin full of paper and rubbish,” he said.

“Once it took hold, the flames engulfed the canteen and caused extensive damage to the inside and outside.”

The club's canteen was set alight in late 2025.

Today, police said a 15-year-old boy was arrested over the alleged arson and referred to Youth Aid.

Bunting said CCTV from the incident helped detectives find those responsible.

“We are pleased to have been able to hold a person to account for their actions,” Bunting said.

“The BMX Club worked really hard to set up the canteen, and it was part of what kept them running.

“The alleged offenders’ thoughtless actions have done real harm to this community.”
