One person has been seriously injured following a a blaze at a liquor store in the Hawke's Bay town of Wairoa this morning.
Emergency services received a report of a fridge fire at a commercial building on the corner of Paul and Lucknow Streets at around 8.38am on Sunday.
"On arrival, the fire was well involved," a Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said, adding that the general public were asked to avoid the area.
Crews from Wairoa, Gisborne, Nuhaka and Manutuke responded.
St John said one ambulance responded at around 8.46am.
"Our crew treated one patient in a serious condition and transported them to Wairoa Hospital," a St John spokesperson said.
NZTA said State Highway 2 had closed between Queen St and Black St following the blaze.
"The shop fire is on Lucknow Street and has closed the stretch of road either side. A detour is in place," an NZTA spokesperson said.
"Vehicles are being detoured via Lucknow Street and Locke Streets. The detour is suitable for all vehicles."
