A planned speed-limit increase for Wellington's Transmission Gully has been fast-tracked ahead of severe weather conditions expected to hit the North Island this weekend.
From 12.01am on Sunday, the new 110km/h limit on State Highway 1 through Transmission Gully will come into force – 24 hours earlier than planned.
NZTA Waka Kotahi said the change had initially been scheduled for Sunday night, but work crews would not be able to safely switch the signs for that schedule due to strong winds forecast. The work would instead be completed on Saturday night.
"With roadworks ongoing on the motorway after the new speed limit takes effect, drivers are asked to follow all temporary speed limits in place at roadwork sites," the organisation said.
"This is essential for keeping the public and contractors safe."
NZTA publicly consulted on an increase to the 27km sections' speed limit in mid 2025, with Transport Minister Chris Bishop announcing the change earlier this week.
The update comes as MetService has issued orange level wind warnings for Wairarapa, the Tararua District and the Wellington region from Sunday evening through to Monday.
Heavy rain watches had also been issued, as well as a strong wind warning for eastern Marlborough, affecting parts of SH1.
