Police appeal for information over historical offending from ex-priest

Police are appealing for anybody with information about alleged historical offending by a former priest to come forward, after name suppression was lifted last month.

Father Rowan Donohuge pleaded guilty in the Christchurch District Court on November 13, 2025 to a number of historical sex offences against former students at St Bede's College.

He is due to be sentenced later this year.

Sargeant Karen Simmons said police had been made aware of allegations of similar offences against Donohuge by former students of Wellington school St. Patrick's College Silverstream, where Donohuge worked from 1982 to 1992.

"We know it can be incredibly difficult and at times distressing to talk about these matters, but we would like to reassure any victims of offending that we will take them seriously," Simmons said.

"Police has a number of officers and detectives dedicated to these cases, and we provide a safe space to report offending in confidence."

Earlier this week, RNZ reported that St Bede's College was told nearly 20 years ago about allegations of sexual offending involving Donohuge, but the information was passed on informally and no written record was kept.

It said that Donohuge admitted to sexual abuse offences, related to four boys who were boarding at St Bede's College in Christchurch between 1996 and 2000, to his leaders of his religious order the Society of Mary in 2007.

Anybody with relevant information, or who wished to report similar offending, was encouraged to contact police via 105.
