FENZ preparing, campground evacuated as heavy rain looms

MetService is warning of a "very active 24 hours" of weather across the country, with heavy rain forecast for parts of the country still reeling from severe weather three weeks ago.

Fire and Emergency NZ has sent two urban search and rescue teams to Hicks Bay and Te Araroa ahead of the weather, in preparation for any emergency situations, while a Hawke's Bay campground was evacuated after an investigation found an "extreme risk" of a landslip at the site.

MetService meteorologist Heather Keats told TVNZ's Breakfast it was going to be a "very busy few days" ahead.

Older students alert bus driver to smoke, help younger kids to safety

Four secondary school students were on board a bus that caught on fire in north Auckland this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Pakiri Rd in Leigh around 8am and found the bus in flames.

Mahurangi College Principal Tony Giles thanked two senior students on the bus who alerted the driver to the smoke and then assisted in helping two younger students off safely.

Woman jailed after dead people's names used in Covid subsidy fraud

A Wellington woman has been sentenced to 20 months in prison after she used her own name and those of 10 others, including dead people, to fraudulently obtain $28,118 and attempt to obtain a further $200,000 through the Covid-19 Wage Subsidy Scheme.

Sariah Wehipeihana pleaded guilty in January last year to two representative charges of dishonestly using a document related to five successful wage subsidy applications and a further 27 unsuccessful applications.

An Auckland couple received a shock when they awoke in the early hours of the morning to find a stranger sleeping in their bedroom.

The couple, who are in their 80s, were asleep at their Bucklands Beach home in Auckland's east when the scary saga unfolded.
