Flares spark late-night fire at Otago home, damage parked car

Detective Kevin Kirkman said officers were called to Chelmsford St at around 11.50pm on Tuesday, with a property found to have it ceiling on fire.

Police are investigating after flares were allegedly fired in a street in the north Otago town of Hampden this week, setting a home’s ceiling alight and damaging a parked car.

Detective Kevin Kirkman said officers were called to Chelmsford St at around 11.50pm on Tuesday, with a property found to have it ceiling on fire.

A scene examination was completed at the address.

"Following initial enquiries we believe this fire has been caused by a flare, a projectile that produces a bright light or intense heat without an explosion and is commonly used by boaties," Kirman said.

"We also believe a second flare has been launched, landing on a vehicle parked on Chelmsford Street causing damage to the vehicle."

Police were now seeking any information relating to the incident, including CCTV or dashcam footage.

"We would like to hear from anyone in the wider Chelmsford St, Derby St, Nottingham St, Stafford St, and Durham St areas, specifically between 10.30pm on Tuesday and 1am Wednesday," Kirkman said.

Anyone with relevant information should contact police on 105.

A house fire in the Auckland suburb of Rānui early on Wednesday morning was allegedly caused by a flare being fired at it.
