A 15-year-old boy has been charged after falling from an electric trail bike he'd allegedly stolen at knifepoint on Auckland's North Shore.

Video provided to Seven Sharp showed the rider hurtling along a footpath and onto a residential street before coming to grief and being taken into police custody. The e-bike was then hauled away on the back of a truck.

The wild and dangerous escapade began when a teenage boy was approached by another teen outside a fast food restaurant on Coliseum Dr in Albany at aound 7.40pm on Tuesday, Inspector Aron McKeown said.

The second teenager allegedly took the victim's electric trail bike at knifepoint before riding across the car park towards Westfield Albany and "out of sight".

McKeown said the Police Eagle helicopter happened to be in the area when the crew was alerted to the incident.

"Eagle responded and located the bike being driven at excessive speed on the Northern Busway," he said.

"The bike has continued to be tracked by Eagle, as it exited at Constellation Station, making its way onto the Northern Motorway."

The bike was not pursued but the helicopter continued to monitor the teenager's movements from above.

The teenager was seen leaving Tristram Ave and cutting through a football game on Becroft Park before heading towards Milford.

"This reckless run came to an end after he fell off the bike on Bevyn St," McKeown said.

"The 15-year-old didn’t suffer any injuries, but he did find himself in handcuffs and under arrest."

The teenager was due to appear in the North Shore Youth Court today charged with aggravated robbery, reckless driving, and possession for supply of cannabis.

"We are ensuring the young victim is being provided by support after this unsettling event," McKeown said.
