Person in critical condition after fall from Otago University building

A person is in critical condition after an incident at University of Otago in the early hours of this morning.

NZ Herald reported the person had fallen from a 10 metre building at the university.

Hato Hone St John told 1News it was notified of the incident after 12.13am today, and it had transferred the patient to Dunedin Hospital.

Police said it received a report of an injured person at the campus just after midnight.

Initial inquiries determined the person was not a Otago University student, according to police.

"Officers are investigating the circumstances around the incident."

Photos from the scene show a wine bottle perched on a high ledge.

Students in the area said they were saddened to see the scene this morning and learn what had happened.

Some have told 1News they are shocked to hear of the injuries and some had not realised someone was hurt until walking past the cordoned area.

Others said their parents had got in touch to check on their welfare.

Many have also expressed confusion as to how someone got up so high.

Students are only just returning to Dunedin for orientation week, which begins on Saturday.

Grant Robertson

Otago Vice-Chancellor Grant Robertson said campus watch staff had immediately contacted emergency services after discovering the person.

"With students returning to the city, we strongly encourage everyone to look out for one another, make safe choices and seek help early if they have concerns. Our campus watch staff are available 24/7 to assist students in the North Dunedin community."

Robertson said staff had already begun their regular outreach in North Dunedin, which included door-to-door visits to flats.

"We provide practical information on personal safety, property security, safe behaviour in two-storey flats, avoiding climbing on roofs, waste and recycling requirements and other matters important to a safe start to the year."

He added: "I cannot stress enough about the importance of staying off roofs."

"The tragic outcomes of that are well-known and we do not want anyone, or their friends and whānau to experience that."

Yesterday a person was injured after falling from the roof of Christchurch's Tūranga library.
