Nancy Guthrie: FBI releases images of masked person tampering with camera

FBI director Kash Patel said law enforcement has uncovered "previously inaccessible new images".

The FBI have released "previously inaccessible" new images of a person amid the investigation into the suspected abduction of Nancy Guthrie.

The search for the 84-year-old mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie has now surpassed a week, after investigators believed Guthrie was taken against her will from her home just outside Tucson.

Multiple press outlets received alleged ransom letters during the past week, with at least one letter made monetary demands and set deadlines for receiving the money.

Previously, DNA tests showed blood on Guthrie’s front porch was a match to her and her doorbell camera was disconnected in the early hours on the day of her suspected abduction, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has said.

This morning, FBI director Kash Patel said law enforcement has uncovered "previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie's front door the morning of her disappearance".

Video released by the FBI showed the person wearing a backpack, long sleeves and pants and walking up to Guthrie's door at her home. The footage shows the person trying to cover a camera near the front door with their gloved hand before putting plants in front of the camera.

"Over the last eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff's Department have been working closely with our private sector partners to continue to recover any images or video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s home that may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors - including the removal of recording devices," he wrote.

The video was recovered from residual data located in backend systems.

This was the first major break in the investigation that has raised more questions than answers, including whether the 84-year-old who disappeared from her home in Arizona was still alive, and came as as law enforcement and her family intensified calls for assistance from the public.

The desperate search for Guthrie has also become the latest investigation to pique the widespread interest of online armchair detectives.

Up until now, authorities have released few details, leaving it unclear if ransom notes demanding money with deadlines already passed were authentic and whether the Guthrie family has had any contact with the abductors.

Authorities say they have growing concerns about Nancy Guthrie’s health because she needs daily medication.
