A man has been left with serious injuries after getting pummelled by a kangaroo while rescuing his dog in Victoria.

The man, identified only as Col, was drinking with a friend earlier this week when they heard barking at a nearby dam, Melbourne radio station 3AW reported.

When they went to investigate, the pair spotted a kangaroo attempting to grab Col's dog.

Col struck the kangaroo with a stick before handing the dog to his friend as the kangaroo hopped into the water to escape.

He then turned around to see the marsupial surging out of the water "like a bloody rocket" and headbutting him in the face before punching "the crap out of me".

Col was knocked to the ground and as he stood up, the kangaroo had delivered a "flying roundhouse to the back".

"Then he's jumped on me and his little gremlin hands have grabbed my head," he said.

"He wouldn't let go and he's just started booting the s*** out of me."

His friend then struck the animal with a shovel, ending the 25-second beatdown.

"I'm very lucky and if I hadn't have rolled onto my stomach I would've been in a lot worse of a way," he said.

Col was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his stomach and backside.

"He embarrassingly kicked me in the a***, and I've got a big hole on the a*** cheek."
