Person critically injured after central Christchurch assault

A person has been arrested after an assault left a person critically injured in central Christchurch this afternoon.

Emergency services received reports of a "grievous assault" on Fitzgerald Ave at around 12.20pm on Monday.

Police said one person had been taken into custody at the scene.

St John said an ambulance and a rapid response unit responded.

"One patient, in critical condition, has been transported to Christchurch Hospital," a St John spokesperson said.

Footage captured by 1News at the scene showed the front of a property cordoned off, with what appeared to be clothes strewn on the driveway.
