Mosque killer claims 'wildly fluctuating' mental state behind guilty pleas

The terrorist who killed 51 people at two Christchurch mosques claims he was mentally unwell and “irrational” when he pleaded guilty to his crimes.

He is currently giving evidence in the Court of Appeal as part of an attempt to get those pleas overturned.

His central argument is that he was incapable of making rational decisions when he entered the pleas due to the conditions in jail, which he says were "torturous and inhumane".

Prime Minister says Trump should apologise for post about Obamas

The Prime Minister says US President Donald Trump should apologise for the sharing of a video on his social media account showing a racist clip depicting Barack and Michelle Obama last week.

At the 60-second mark of a video posted to Truth Social was a quick scene of two primates, with the Obamas' smiling faces imposed on them.

"It was racist. And it's right that it's been removed," Luxon told TVNZ's Breakfast.

Two young people charged with arson over Taupō college fire

Two young people have been charged with arson following a major fire at a Taupō college yesterday.

The N block at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College was badly damaged in the blaze, which saw volunteer and career crews from Lake Taupō, Taupō, Kinloch, Rotorua, Tokoroa, Greerton, Tauranga, Turangi, and Kaingaroa respond.

The school's deputy principal Ben Claxton said it would be shut for the next two days while the site was made safe.
