A woman on a zero alcohol licence has allegedly blown more than five times the legal limit after motorists reported her car veering into oncoming traffic near Hamilton yesterday.
Police said they began receiving reports at around 4.50pm on Sunday of a vehicle being driven erratically on the Waikato Expressway.
Senior Sergeant Chris Painter said a police car intercepted the vehicle near Puketaha and the driver was breath tested.
"The driver was more than five times over the legal limit, however she was also on a zero alcohol licence, meaning she had been forbidden to consume any alcohol before getting behind the wheel."
Painter described the incident as a "shocking example" of someone exercising poor judgement and putting others at risk.
"The calls we received described the vehicle swerving across the centre line and into the path of multiple other vehicles," he said.
"The driver is extremely lucky not to have injured or killed someone. We’re grateful to those people who stopped to call 111 and report this to us.
"We encourage anyone who sees dangerous driving like this to please, let us know as soon as possible – it truly does save lives."
The woman's vehicle was impounded and she has been summonsed to appear before the Hamilton District Court on February 26 on charges including excess breath alcohol and breaching licence conditions.
