'Our beautiful Alex': School mourns boy, 10, killed in rural Canterbury

A 10-year-old Springston boy has been named as the victim of a fatal crash on a Canterbury road, with a rural primary school mourning the death.

Alexander Bennett died at the scene after being hit by a car while walking on Leeston Rd near Springston about 3.30pm on Wednesday.

Police said inquiries into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing.

"Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time."

The school released a statement to parents today, the Otago Daily Times reported

"With permission from the family, I am able to share it is our beautiful Alex Bennett. Our thoughts are with Kylie, Guyan and their family," the statement read.

"Our hearts go out to them, and we are so grateful for the kindness, support and love shown by our community as we navigate the tragic loss of one of our precious tamariki."
