A good flow of warm air from Australia has helped to settle down the atmosphere over New Zealand in the last few days after the tropical rainmaker of last month.

As a result, many of us will be able to enjoy the outdoors as high pressure sits over the country through the long weekend.

There will be a weak passing front that will try and loiter with a couple of showers for some of us on Friday and Saturday.

But the continued good flow of warmth in the atmosphere will choke the fronts of any oomph so any showers will be short lived.

Waitangi Day for the service at dawn at the Treaty Grounds should be dry with just patchy cloud at first then sunny spells.

During the day there could be the odd heat-of-the-day shower across western parts of the North Island, while further south over the South Island you might need to plan the beach trip or BBQ around a band of showers.

There will be a risk of showers from Fiordland to Southland in the morning and Dunedin and Central Otago and the West Coast in the afternoon.

By Saturday, this fading front will have lost most of its juice but it still might make to you grab the raincoat at times over the upper South Island and western parts of the North Island.

Through the rest of the weekend, for most of us it will be early cloud then sunny spells.

Temperatures will also do well with most of us seeing highs into the lower 20s, but a few places in the north and east of the country could hit the upper 20s at times.

Enjoy the trip to the beach!
