Homicide investigation after man assaulted outside Napier nightclub dies

A homicide investigation has been launched after a man, who was assaulted outside a Napier nightclub died in hospital yesterday.

Hastings 46-year-old Andy Winitana was injured in the attack on West Quay in Ahuriri at around 1am on Sunday.

Police found Winitana unresponsive on the ground following the attack, and he was rushed to Hawke's Bay Hospital in a critical condition.

This morning, police confirmed he died in hospital yesterday.

"We extend our sympathies to his family, who we will continue to support," Detective Sergeant Ryan Kemsley said.

A 21-year-old has appeared in the Napier District Court, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was remanded in custody.

"Further charges are now being considered," Kemsley said.

He was next due to appear in court on 25 February.

Kemsley urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident on the wharf area on West Quay between 12.30-1.30am on Sunday February 1 to contact police.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who might have footage available."

Those with information were asked to contact police on 105.
