Government confirms scrapping full practical test, $80 cut to licence cost

Getting a full driver's licence will cost $80 less under changes confirmed by the Government today, with the second practical test to be scrapped entirely.

The changes are set to take effect from January 25, 2027 - pushed back from the originally proposed date of July 2026.

Senior Labour list MP Peeni Henare has announced he will not seek re-election at the next general election, saying it is time to focus on his family and wellbeing.

Henare, who was first elected to Parliament in 2014, said he had thought "long and hard" about his future over the summer.

'Revenue collector': Speed camera cut from its pole in Auckland

Police are investigating after a speed camera was chopped down in northwest Auckland last week.

The camera on Coatesville-Riverhead Highway was damaged around 7.30pm last Thursday. Police said a member of the public was seen cutting down the pole before leaving the scene in a blue 4WD with a canopy.
