Police warn of disruptions due to protests in Auckland CBD

Those heading into central Auckland today should expect to be delayed by protest and police activity.

Aucklanders are being warned of possible disruptions in the city centre due to separate protests planned for today.

Police said there would be a large-scale operation to prevent supporters of Brian Tamaki's Freedom and Rights Coalition from crossing the Auckland Harbour Bridge after a permit was denied in December.

Meanwhile, a rally likely to draw "large numbers", organised by Toitū Te Aroha, would be held at Te Komititanga Square at around midday before completing a hīkoi up Queen St to Myers Park.

Police said it had "clearly advised" the group planning to cross the bridge that access would not be allowed.

Superintendent Naila Hassan said officers would be "well placed" to respond to any attempts to cross on foot.

“A large operation has been planned, with resource coming from across the Auckland region and other parts of the country,” Hassan said.

“Our focus will be on ensuring everyone’s safety and to minimise any disruptions to those Aucklanders going about their business as much as possible."

She said travelling on the motorway near Victoria Park, the city centre, and Ponsonby to prepare for delays and "significant" bus detours.

People heading into the city were asked to "plan ahead".

She also cautioned that anyone who tried to access the motorway on foot would be breaking the law.

“Anyone attempting this will be subject to enforcement action, and we strongly urge anyone considering taking part to think about their actions.

“Police reiterate that the public have the right to protest, provided that it is peaceful and lawful.”

For the Toitū Te Aroha protest, Inspector Jacqui Whittaker said numbers were expected to grow around Te Komititanga Square from mid-morning, with participants expected to disperse from Myers Park in the afternoon.

“Police will be monitoring the hīkoi as it progresses up Queen St, and our focus is on ensuring this is completed safely.”

She asked the public to remain patient around the city.
