A woman has been picked up by a motorist while walking on the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

A police spokesperson said officers responded to "several reports" of a person walking on the bridge spanning the Waitematā Harbour on Wednesday afternoon.

Footage sent to 1News showed the woman walking in the far left northbound lane, gesticulating and appearing to yell at drivers avoiding her.

"A member of the public picked the person up, who appeared distressed, and met with police on the other side of the bridge where we were able to give her a lift back home," a police spokesperson said.
