One person has died after a crash involving a motorcycle and a car on SH7 in Canterbury around midday today.
A statement from the police said: "Sadly, despite emergency services' best efforts, the motorcyclist died at the scene."
The state highway at Hurunui was closed in both directions in the area of the crash.
Motorists were urged to avoid the stretch between Hammer Springs Rd and Culverden in Canterbury's Tekoa Range.
The Serious Crash Unit was at the scene to investigate the cause of the crash.
