A man wanted over a shooting in Palmerston North earlier this month has been arrested following a police pursuit yesterday that ended with the 33-year-old fleeing on foot before being captured.
One person was left critically injured in the January 12 shooting at Marriner Reserve in Highbury, with police earlier seeking "vitally important" CCTV footage as part of their investigation.
Around 12pm on Tuesday, officers conducting area inquiries following a report of a stolen vehicle in Roslyn spotted the car on Featherston St.
The vehicle was spiked on Railway Rd just after 12.30pm and came to a stop on Alexander St.
The driver, who police said was a person of interest in the Marriner Reserve shooting, fled on foot.
Officers found and arrested the man at around 5pm.
Suspect was 'very motivated to remain at large'
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thompson said the arrest was “a great result for our community”.
“The work of our frontline and specialist groups, to take this man into custody without incident, is a credit to their skill and professionalism,” he said.
“It was clear from yesterday’s events that this man was very motivated to remain at large… however, police staff’s persistence and patience paid off.”
The 33-year-old man was due to appear in Palmerston North District court today.
He was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm with a firearm, in relation to the incident on January 12.
He was also charged with two counts of unlawfully taking, unlawful possession of a firearm, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified in relation to yesterday's events.
