French national named as e-scooter rider fatally hit by train

Police at the scene of a fatal collision between a scooter and a train on Christchurch's Lincoln Rd.

A French national living in Christchurch has been identified as the e-scooter rider killed after being struck by a freight train in Addington last week.

Maxime Antoine Vandenbosch, 30, died at the Lincoln Rd level crossing on Friday, January 23. Police inquiries into the circumstances of the 3am incident are ongoing.

"Our thoughts are with the loved ones of Maxime during this difficult time," police said.

The 30-year-old was identified as an e-scooter rider in initial reports of the crash.

Last week, KiwiRail chief operations officer Duncan Roy called it a "distressing situation".

"Our thoughts are with all those involved, their families and loved ones," he said

"Our locomotive engineer (train driver) was uninjured but has been relieved as per standard procedure and is being supported by KiwiRail."
