Emergency services rush to helicopter crash north of Wellington

Police were notified at 7.30am via activation of an automated crash alert.

Emergency services are responding to a helicopter crash in the Paekākāriki Hill area, north of Wellington this morning.

It was not clear if anyone was injured in the crash, which was reported to police through an automated crash alert at 7.30am.

"Maritime NZ’s Rescue Coordination Centre is coordinating the search efforts," a police spokesperson said.

Police were pictured at a cordon in Battle Hill Farm Forest Park.

A Maritime NZ Rescue Coordination Centre spokesperson said said two rescue helicopters and police were at the scene, and support from Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) was being organised.

Wellington Free Ambulance said it was an "active scene" and directed all inquiries to leading agencies.

FENZ have been approached for comment.

Paekākāriki Hill sits at 274m high, and is about 45km north of Wellington City, and about 11km from the seaside town of Paekākāriki.

MP for Ōtaki, based in Kapiti, Tim Costley said online he was "hoping for the best outcome and thinking of all involved".
