Teenager in court charged with murder of Burnham woman

A teenager charged with murdering a woman in Christchurch overnight has been given interim name suppression.

The 19-year-old appeared in the Christchurch District Court this afternoon charged with allegedly murdering one woman, and assaulting two others he was in a family relationship with.

He appeared by a video link from prison, wearing a sleeveless shirt handed out to inmates. At times, he held his head in his hands during the short appearance.

Police said emergency services responded to a report of "disorder" at Burnham School Rd around 3am this morning.

Officers found a woman dead on arrival and arrested the 19-year-old soon afterwards.

Police in boiler suits could be seen scouring the rural property for evidence this morning, and setting up a tent as a thorough scene examination was carried out.

The accused's lawyer Philip Shamy asked for interim name suppression and for his client to be remanded without plea until his next appearance in the High Court. Police requestedinterim suppression also be granted for the three female victims and Shamy noted he had no opposition to this.

All applications were granted by Judge Brian Callaghan with the man remanded in custody and due to appear in the High Court next month.
