Man in custody after dramatic pursuit in Palmerston North

A driver has been taken into police custody after allegedly fleeing officers in a stolen vehicle in Palmerston North this afternoon.

Police said a vehicle was reported stolen from Main St in Roslyn around 12pm.

Officers observed a vehicle on Featherston St before "deflation devices" were used successfully on Railway Rd just after 12.25pm.

Following a police pursuit, the vehicle was abandoned on Alexander St and the driver fled on foot, police said.

A firearm was seized after police searched the vehicle.

Armed police could be seen surrounding a property where a person was believed to be barricaded inside.

Cordons were in place around the Alexander St area but it had since reopened.
