A period of cooler and calmer weather is on its way after last week's severe weather conditions, with MetService forecasting cooler temperatures and a low-risk of disruptive weather ahead.
The final week of January is set to begin on a cool and showery note, before high pressure builds from midweek bringing more settling conditions, particularly for the North Island.
Most centres in the North Island celebrating Auckland Anniversary Day could expect to see showers easing into Monday afternoon, before clearing Tuesday afternoon.
Bay of Plenty and Gisborne could expect mostly fine conditions, while thunderstorms were possible for Napier and Hastings as a trough moved up the East Coast.
Horowhenua to Wellington were forecast to experience scattered showers and cloudy periods, before clearing Tuesday.
MetService said most of the South Island could expect scattered showers on Monday, particularly about the high ground where some could be heavy and thundery.
Meteorologist Michael Pawley said the unsettled weather was expected to ease as the week progressed.
"Showers could be heavy and thundery about the inland ranges of the North Island and upper South Island on Tuesday afternoon as the ground heats up, setting up daytime convection," Pawley said.
"Most places, however, will see showers clearing in the afternoon and evening."
Temperatures across the North Island were forecast to remain cooler early in the week, before lifting back to the mid 20s in most areas as southwesterly winds eased.
Further South, Canterbury could expect to see significant temperature swings, with Ashburton and Timaru forecast to reach a cool maximum of 16°C on Tuesday.
Strengthening northwesterlies from Wednesday were set to push temperatures up to 27°C in Ashburton and Christchurch on Wednesday, with a cold front forecast to bring rain to the West Coast.
