Roads closed around Auckland's Onehunga Mall following large blaze

Roads remain closed around Onehunga Mall closed today following a large fire which broke out last night.

Emergency services were called to the "significant" blaze at the building between Arthur St and Church St shortly after 8pm.

Police were also called to assist Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), as "the fire is producing significant smoke - those in the area are advised to stay inside and close windows and doors".

1News footage showed plumes of dark smoke moving across the area, as a crowd of people watched on.

At its peak, FENZ said eight fire crews and 10 support vehicles were at the scene.

A spokesperson said crews "made good progress" on the fire, and it was extinguished shortly after 10pm.

"One or two trucks will remain on site overnight to continue dampening down and monitoring, a spokesperson said.

Police cordons on Onehunga Mall between Arthur and Church Streets remain in place this morning.

There were no reported injuries, but St John has been contacted for comment.
