Clean-up on SH1: 500 litres of human waste spills onto Canterbury road

Portable toilets

A truck believed to be carrying portaloos crashed on State Highway 1 in Canterbury this afternoon, spilling hundreds of litres of human waste onto the road.

Emergency services were called just before 2pm after the truck rolled on the Orari-Rangitata Highway section of SH1 near Geraldine.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said about 500 litres of waste spilled onto the highway, after earlier estimates suggested up to 3000 litres.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured, and bunding was used to contain the spillage.

Police said a company was at the scene carrying out a clean-up.
