Man missing after falling from boat on Waioeka River

Police were called to the Waioeka River at around 5.30pm on Friday.

A man is missing after reportedly falling out of his boat and being swept downstream at an East Coast river yesterday.

Police were called to the Waioeka River at around 5.30pm on Friday.

Inspector Nicky Cooney said emergency services carried out an initial search of the area and located the vessel nearby.

"A rescue helicopter and private helicopters were also engaged in the search, as well as local jet boat operators," she said.

"Sadly, at this stage, the man remains outstanding. We continue to support the man's family at this difficult time."

Search efforts are continuing today, focusing on the area near the junction with Waiata Stream.

Police say land and water teams, along with a drone, will be used throughout the day.
