A motorcyclist seen speeding by police has died after hitting the back of a truck on State Highway 1 in Auckland Thursday night.
Superintendent Shanan Gray said a police motorways unit was carrying out radar speed detection on the southbound lanes of SH1 near Ōtara.
"At around 11.15pm, the unit has detected a motorcycle travelling south at high speed," Gray said.
"Police signalled it to stop, however it continued travelling at high speed."
The motorcyclist was not pursued by police.
Officers were later flagged down by the driver of an attenuator truck, after the motorcycle had collided with the rear of the vehicle just north of the East Tamaki Road off-ramp.
"The male rider sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene."
Southbound lanes on SH1 were closed while a scene examination was carried out overnight.
The man's body has since been removed and the lanes reopened shortly before 5am.
Police said an investigation was underway and the independent police conduct authority would be notified of the incident.
