Teens among people unaccounted for after Mount Maunganui slip
Six people are unaccounted for following a landslide in Mount Maunganui, police confirmed this afternoon, while they are also seeking information on three other people.
The slip occurred at Beachside Holiday Park at the base of Mauao on Thursday morning, which hit the campsite's toilet and shower block, knocking over campervans and tents.
Bay of Plenty Police Superintendent Tim Anderson said six people were unaccounted for, including two teenagers – the youngest aged 15.
Inflation increases to 3.1%, above target band
Inflation has increased by 3.1% according to official figures released by Stats NZ today - the highest annual rate since the June 2024 quarter, when it was 3.3%
The increase in the 12 months to the December quarter followed a 3.0% rise in the 12 months to the September 2025 quarter.
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s target band for the annual inflation rate is 1 to 3%.
US completes withdrawal from the World Health Organization
The US has finalised withdrawing from the World Health Organization, one year after President Donald Trump announced America was ending its 78-year-old commitment, federal officials said.
The US owes more than US$130 million (NZ$219 million) to the global health agency, according to WHO.
Trump administration officials have acknowledged they haven't finished working out some issues, such as lost access to data from other countries that could give America an early warning of a new pandemic.
