World-renowned Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani has died at his home in Rome, aged 93.

"Valentino Garavani was not only a constant guide and inspiration for all of us, but a true source of light, creativity and vision," the designer's foundation said in a statement today on social media.

Known mononymously as Valentino, his gowns – often in his signature shade of 'Valentino red' – were adored by generations of fans over his nearly 50-year career, including Hollywood actors Elizabeth Taylor and Julia Roberts, Queen Rania of Jordan, and former First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

Valentino's body will repose at the Valentino Foundation's headquarters in Rome on Thursday and Friday.

His funeral will be held Saturday at the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Rome’s Piazza della Repubblica.
